The facility first opened in September 1986. It was built on the grounds of a nineteenth-century stately home that had been abandoned for many decades before the site was transformed into Aberdelghy Golf Course.

The course initially opened as a nine-hole course and later extended to 18 holes in 1998.

Over the years, Aberdelghy Golf Club has continued to grow and develop. Lambeg Golf Club, established at Aberdelghy Golf Course, now has over 700 members. The club’s first Men’s Captain was Mr T Smith, who served from 1988 to 1989, while its first Lady Captain was Mrs M. O. Tiernan. Five holes were redesigned in 2019 and a new driving range was launched in May 2024, adding another exciting dimension to the facility.

To mark the milestone, Lambeg Golf Club, which was established at Aberdelghy Golf Course, will host a special celebration on Saturday 19 September 2026.

Club Captain Ernie McAleenon will host his Charity Day in aid of the club’s charity partner, Friends of the Cancer Centre.

Councillor Sharon Lowry, Chair of the Communities and Wellbeing Committee, welcomed the anniversary celebrations: “Forty years is a fantastic milestone for Aberdelghy Golf Course. It is wonderful to see how the course has grown over the years.

From its beginnings as a nine-hole course to the 18-hole course we see today, Aberdelghy has continued to improve. The redesigned holes and new driving range are great examples of this.

It is also fantastic to see Lambeg Golf Club continuing to celebrate its strong connection with Aberdelghy Golf Course. I look forward to joining members on Saturday 19th September as we celebrate this special occasion.”
