Local golfers have been hitting the fairways to help Aberdelghy Golf Course celebrate its historic 40th anniversary. The ruby milestone was marked with a commemorative Charity Captain’s Day supported by club members and invited guests.

The facility first opened in September 1986, which saw a former nineteenth-century stately home transformed into a magnificent 9-hole Aberdelghy Golf Course. Due to the popularity of the facility, the course was extended to 18 holes in 1998, creating a standout destination for golfers across Northern Ireland and beyond.

Thousands of visitors have teed off across the stunning parkland course, with many returning regularly to play a repeat round of golf.  Membership has also continued to thrive, with the course now boasting over 700 members, which is testament to the growing passion for golf in the Lisburn area.

The anniversary competition was enjoyed by over 140 golfers. The overall winner was presented to Scott Smyth with Martin Rae collecting second place and Scott Duffie in third.

Michael Nicholson claimed Best Gross, while Margaret Cullen took the Ladies’ first prize.

Presenting the prizes, Councillor Sharon Lowry, Chair of the Communities and Wellbeing Committee said: “I am delighted to celebrate 40 years of Aberdelghy Golf Course in partnership with Lambeg Golf Club.

Over the years, the course has grown into a fantastic facility and a wonderful golfing community. Membership has continued to grow, which shows that people come not just to play golf but to build friendships, develop skills and enjoy the outdoors.

I would also like to congratulate Lambeg Golf Club’s men’s team on their outstanding Ulster Senior Men’s Fourball victory. This was a first-ever Ulster win for the club and is a fantastic achievement.

I would also like to commend the club for their fund-raising efforts for their charity partner, Friends of the Cancer Centre, which is such a worthwhile cause.”
